Historical labour migration in the 1960s–1980s brought thousands of Portuguese workers to Luxembourg, where they filled critical roles in construction, manufacturing, and services. Many later relocated to neighbouring countries, particularly Germany and France, due to stronger job markets and established Portuguese communities.

By the 2020s, Germany had become a major hub for Luxembourg-born Portuguese, followed by France, where cultural and linguistic ties eased integration. A 2021 study on Portuguese immigrants in Luxembourg revealed that 31.7% of first-generation migrants had spent decades in the country, with many raising families there before moving on. The IRMA project found that while some retained strong ties to Luxembourg, others faced intergenerational conflict—particularly between parents who missed Portugal’s red-roofed landscapes and children adapting to Luxembourg’s modern urban environment.

Economically, this diaspora strengthened Luxembourg’s labour market by filling gaps in sectors like healthcare and trade. Socially, however, some elderly migrants reported loneliness, highlighting the challenges of cultural adaptation. Today, Luxembourg’s Portuguese community remains one of the most visible diasporas, with ongoing remittances and family visits sustaining transnational bonds.

[19

post-5664","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-france
["GET
