Opposition Leader and People’s National Movement (PNM) Political Leader Pennelope Beckles-Robinson has sharply criticised the Government’s 2027 National Budget, describing it as a “bikini budget” that lacks sufficient information, measurable achievements and a clear vision for Trinidad and Tobago.<\/p>\n
Speaking at an Opposition press conference following Finance Minister Davendranath Tancoo’s budget presentation on Monday, October 12, Beckles argued that the Government failed to provide a meaningful account of its performance during the previous financial year.<\/p>\n
She said citizens should have been told what the administration accomplished, how public funds were spent and what specific projects would drive economic development in the coming year.<\/p>\n
Beckles compared the presentation to a draft budget, suggesting that much of the information necessary to evaluate the Government’s proposals was missing.<\/p>\n
She questioned why the Finance Minister repeatedly indicated that individual ministers would provide further details about their respective portfolios instead of outlining the plans during the main budget presentation.<\/p>\n
The Opposition Leader also challenged the Government’s claims about economic transformation, arguing that such ambitions should be supported by identifiable projects, employment targets and measurable outcomes.<\/p>\n
According to Beckles, the absence of detailed project information makes it difficult for citizens to assess whether the administration can deliver on its commitments.<\/p>\n
She characterised the Budget as empty and lacking direction, maintaining that the Government had failed to demonstrate how its proposed spending would translate into tangible improvements.<\/p>\n
