Led by Professor Chad Heinzel, the group spent two weeks exploring Iceland’s volcanic landscapes, glaciers, and geothermal hot springs—all while learning about the island’s Viking heritage and modern sustainability efforts.

The trip combined academic study with hands-on experiences, including climbing volcanoes, hiking black sand beaches, and witnessing the Northern Lights. Students were particularly struck by Iceland’s commitment to environmental conservation, noting the absence of single-use plastics and the widespread use of renewable energy. One participant, Peyton Paulson, an environmental science major, praised Iceland’s waste-conscious culture, observing that locals treated their natural resources with deep respect.

Beyond the geological wonders, students engaged with Iceland’s history in Reykjavík’s museums and cultural sites.
