Alain has revealed that she wrote Samantha J’s song Tight Up Skirt, despite the song’s character not being based on her own personal experience.

The Jamaican singer-songwriter made the disclosure during a discussion about songwriting on the No NDA Podcast.

Alain explained that songwriters do not necessarily have to live every story they write about.

She recalled being brought into the writing process when another song was initially being considered. After observing the young artist and thinking about her image, Alain said she developed the concept that became Tight Up Skirt.

Alain said the experience demonstrates how songwriters can create material by studying the artist they are writing for and developing a story that suits that performer.

She added that imagination allows writers to create believable songs even when the subject matter is not autobiographical.
