The crash occurred shortly after 6 a.m. on October 4, 2026, along the Southern Main Road. According to information received, the driver of a red Nissan Note, registration PEL 8295, had left a gas station after refuelling and was travelling north along the roadway. A short distance from the gas station, the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The Nissan Note struck a metal barrier on the western side of the roadway before plunging approximately 15 feet into the Cunupia River below. The driver, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, was travelling with two other occupants, a man and a woman. All three occupants were rescued from the vehicle and taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex for treatment. The driver later succumbed to his injuries at hospital. The two other occupants remained warded in critical condition following the crash. The vehicle was reportedly a rental car belonging to a company based in Arima.
