Veteran Jamaican coach Neville Bell says the country remains significantly behind in several areas of football development, including playing surfaces, infrastructure and investment in young players.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the No NDA Podcast, Bell argued that developing footballers requires more than simply improving their technical abilities. He said mindset and habits are easier to shape when coaches begin working with players at younger ages.<\/p>\n
Bell said repetition can improve technical skills, but changing the mindset of an older player can be considerably more difficult. He argued that this is one reason major football systems identify and develop talented players from an early age.<\/p>\n
He also raised concerns about the quality of football surfaces in Jamaica, saying there are only a small number of grounds he considers genuinely good.<\/p>\n
According to Bell, poor surfaces affect how football can be played, particularly for teams attempting a possession-based style. He recalled coaching on grounds where stones protruded from the surface, creating both technical difficulties and potential safety concerns.<\/p>\n
Bell said properly constructed natural-grass football surfaces require significant investment because drainage, sand, stone and other elements beneath the grass are important to maintaining playable conditions during heavy rain.<\/p>\n
He also cautioned against treating artificial turf as a complete solution, arguing that repeated use can create physical concerns for players.<\/p>\n
Bell said Jamaica’s football challenges therefore cannot be reduced to one problem. In his view, youth development, coaching, facilities and investment must work together if the country is to make sustained progress.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
