Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and her husband, Dr Gregory Bissessar, are celebrating 55 years of marriage, marking more than half a century of life together. The couple married in 1971, years before Persad-Bissessar entered the political arena and eventually became Trinidad and Tobago\u2019s first female Prime Minister. According to Persad-Bissessar\u2019s parliamentary biography, Gregory was her high-school sweetheart. They married while she was studying in London and later lived in Jamaica, where they continued building their lives and pursuing their professional and academic careers. Their marriage has since accompanied Persad-Bissessar through decades of public service, including her career as a teacher and attorney before her rise through Trinidad and Tobago\u2019s political landscape. The couple have also raised a family together and have one son. Persad-Bissessar has publicly spoken about the importance of her husband\u2019s support throughout their years together. On their 54th wedding anniversary in 2025, she reflected on a marriage built on love, friendship and enduring partnership, thanking Gregory for his strength, kindness and steadfast support. Their relationship has therefore developed largely away from the political spotlight, even as Persad-Bissessar became one of the country\u2019s most prominent political figures.
