Though he passed away in 1982, his groundbreaking work on the mammalian placenta remains a cornerstone of modern obstetrics.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Woodbrook, Port of Spain, Amoroso was one of twelve siblings in a Catholic family. He earned a BSc and an MBBS from University College Dublin before expanding his horizons in Germany and at University College London, where he completed a PhD in 1934.<\/p>\n<p>In 1935 he broke barriers as the first black staff member at the Royal Veterinary College, London. By 1947 he had been appointed Chair of Veterinary Physiology, a role he led until 1968, shaping one of England\u2019s most respected departments and later becoming an Emeritus Professor.<\/p>\n<p>Amoroso\u2019s research on placentation, published in Marshall\u2019s Physiology of Reproduction (1952), earned him a Fellowship of the Royal Society in 1957 and a CBE in 1969.
