Former Attorney General Faris Al-Rawi has warned that the Opposition is prepared to take legal action if the Government attempts to further extend Trinidad and Tobago\u2019s State of Emergency.<\/p>\n
Speaking during an Opposition press conference on Thursday, Al-Rawi said any attempt by the Government to continue the SOE beyond its current period would be met with a legal response, with the Government having to defend its actions before the courts.<\/p>\n
His warning comes as the future of the State of Emergency becomes a major political and constitutional issue, with the Government considering its next steps regarding the emergency measures.<\/p>\n
Al-Rawi made it clear that the Opposition intends to closely scrutinise any mechanism used by the Government to keep the SOE in place. He said that if the Government proceeds with an extension that the Opposition believes is unconstitutional, it should expect the matter to be challenged in court.<\/p>\n
The State of Emergency has been a central part of the Government\u2019s response to crime, with the administration pointing to the emergency measures as part of its wider national security strategy.<\/p>\n
