FIVE DEAD AFTER AMAZON CARGO PLANE OVERRUNS MIAMI AIRPORT RUNWAY AND HITS VEHICLES<\/p>\n
At least five people have been killed and five others injured after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday, September 6.
\nPrime Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 freighter operated by cargo airline 21 Air, was landing shortly before 2 p.m. after travelling from San Juan, Puerto Rico, when it went beyond the runway and struck multiple vehicles on the ground.
\nThe aircraft eventually came to rest near a roadway as flames and heavy smoke poured from the plane, triggering a major emergency response.
\nMiami-Dade Fire Rescue deployed more than 60 units and approximately 200 emergency personnel to the scene. Firefighters used foam and specialised airport firefighting equipment to tackle the blaze while rescue teams searched the aircraft and vehicles involved.
\nAuthorities said the pilot and co-pilot became trapped inside the cockpit following the crash. People were also trapped inside vehicles struck by the aircraft, requiring specialised rescue operations.
\nFive people were confirmed dead.
\nAnother five people were injured, including three who were taken to a trauma centre in critical condition. Two others were hospitalised with less severe injuries.
\nAuthorities have not publicly identified those killed or injured. Officials also initially said it was too early to determine whether those who died were aboard the aircraft or on the ground.
\nEmergency crews were additionally forced to deal with an active fuel leak from the damaged aircraft as operations continued around the crash site.
\nThe accident brought operations at Miami International Airport to a temporary halt, with a ground stop imposed and all runways initially closed.
\nTwo of the airport’s four runways were later reopened, but the incident resulted in widespread flight disruptions, including cancellations and lengthy delays.
\nThe aircraft involved was a 32-year-old Boeing 767-300 freighter. It was originally operated as a passenger aircraft before later being converted for cargo operations.
\nAmazon confirmed that 21 Air was operating the aircraft on its behalf.
\nThe company said it was heartbroken by the loss of five lives and expressed sympathy to the families, loved ones and others affected by the tragedy. Amazon said it was working with authorities and would cooperate fully with the investigation.
\nThe cause of the runway overrun has not yet been determined.
\nThe Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident, with the NTSB sending a team led by Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy to Miami.
