This unique program offers Ellis an unparalleled opportunity to transition from theoretical studies to tangible experiences within the field of neurology.

Through the Synapse Scholar Programme, students engage directly with patients by participating in inpatient rounds and outpatient clinics. “It’s been a full experience for me so far,” Ellis shared about his journey. “You learn a bunch of medical knowledge by being in wards, in the clinic, and also by attending various events.”

The program, launched in 2026, aims to enhance medical education by providing experiential learning opportunities that classrooms alone cannot offer. Synapse Medical Services is committed to offering this immersive exposure to one UWI medical student annually, with the vision of producing a new wave of well-rounded doctors proficient in both theory and practice.

Dr. Nicholas Mirage, CEO of Synapse Medical Services, introduced Ellis at the recent Prison Health Services event, highlighting the significance of this pioneering educational venture. As it looks forward to welcoming more scholars each year, the program underscores the importance of bridging the gap between learning medicine and practicing it.

This initiative marks a transformative step in medical training in Trinidad and Tobago, empowering students like Ellis to shape their futures in healthcare through real-world applications.

Article and image source: instagram.com

Asafa Ellis, UWI medical student, embarks on hands-on neurology training as the inaugural Synapse Scholar.

[62

post-3709","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-trinidad-and-tobago
["GET
