It’s changing. Look at my eyes. My eyesight has been affected,” she recalled telling him.

According to her account, the teacher responded by referring to what was happening to her as “witchcraft” and telling her it was not his concern.

She said he further threatened to flog her until she returned to achieving 90 per cent.

The encounter left the 12-year-old devastated.

“I wept. That day I wept so much,” she recalled, adding that her parents subsequently addressed the matter with the teacher.

But years later, she says it was the lesson she drew from the painful experience that remained with her.

She realised, she said, that other people would not necessarily understand the weight of what she was experiencing or automatically respond with the empathy she needed.

“The world wasn’t going to save me,” she said.

She described making a conscious decision from that point to build a meaningful life and become the woman she wanted to be.

She also said the experience convinced her of the importance of independence and success, particularly so that she would not be easily dismissed when she had something important to say.

“As bad as it was for him to do that to a child, I learned a very important lesson that I had to have a degree of independence,” she said.

Her account has drawn attention to Parry-Romberg syndrome, also known as progressive hemifacial atrophy, a rare disorder characterised by the gradual shrinking of skin and soft tissue, usually affecting one side of the face.

Medical information from the Cleveland Clinic and the National Organization for Rare Disorders says the condition commonly begins during childhood or adolescence and can affect facial skin, fat and muscle and, in some cases, underlying bone.

The effects are not necessarily limited to appearance. Some patients experience facial pain, headaches, migraines and neurological complications, while the eyes can also be affected, resulting in symptoms including blurred or decreased vision, double vision and discomfort.

The precise cause of Parry-Romberg syndrome remains unknown. Researchers have investigated several possible mechanisms, including autoimmune, neurological and vascular processes, but no single explanation has been conclusively established.

The severity also differs considerably between patients. The condition typically progresses gradually before eventually becoming stable, although the length of the active period can vary substantially.

There is currently no cure. Treatment depends on an individual’s symptoms and whether the disease remains active. Medical treatment may be used during the progressive stage, while reconstructive procedures can be considered after the condition has stabilised.

For the woman recounting her childhood experience, however, one of the lasting consequences was psychological rather than physical.

She said being dismissed at such a vulnerable age taught her that she would have to advocate for herself and develop enough independence to ensure her voice could not simply be ignored.

What began as one of her most painful childhood experiences ultimately became, she said, part of her determination to build the life she wanted.

Watch the original video on Instagram

Article and image source: instagram.com

Woman Recalls Teacher Calling Her Rare Facial Condition Witchcraft During Painful Childhood Struggle

[62

post-3581","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-trinidad-and-tobago
["GET
