The United States has imposed fresh import tariffs on 60 major trading partners, including Trinidad and Tobago, as President Donald Trump continues his aggressive trade agenda. The new measures, announced this week, impose duties of between 10 and 12.5 per cent on imports from targeted countries, replacing a temporary 10 per cent levy that expired on Friday.<\/p>\n
For Trinidad and Tobago, the policy means many locally produced goods exported to the United States will now face a continued 10 per cent tariff. This increases costs for American importers and could make T&T products less competitive in the US market, particularly in manufacturing, food and beverage, and chemical sectors. Energy-related exports remain exempt.<\/p>\n
This is the second time Trinidad and Tobago has been caught in a major round of Trump-era tariffs. The country was included in the so-called ‘Liberation Day’ tariffs on April 2, 2025, which imposed a baseline 10 per cent duty on imports from nearly every country. Those tariffs were later struck down by the US Supreme Court, prompting the administration to introduce a new legal framework to maintain similar import duties.<\/p>\n
The White House says the latest tariffs are intended to encourage trading partners to strengthen efforts to eliminate forced labour from global supply chains. Countries with stronger enforcement face the lower 10 per cent rate; others face 12.5 per cent. However, trade experts have questioned that explanation, arguing the primary aim is reducing the US trade deficit and boosting domestic manufacturing.<\/p>\n
Several countries have criticised the move. China rejected the forced labour allegations, while Brazil, Japan, and Australia expressed disappointment. Economists warn renewed trade tensions could increase costs throughout global supply chains, placing additional pressure on businesses and consumers worldwide.<\/p>\n
