Stuart Young Calls for AG, Homeland Security Minister to Resign<\/p>\n
Former Prime Minister Stuart Young has called for the immediate resignation of the Attorney General and the Minister of Homeland Security, accusing the Government of misusing the State of Emergency and Preventive Detention Orders (PDOs).<\/p>\n
In a video statement circulating on social media, Young argued that the Government had acted unconstitutionally by extending the State of Emergency and using emergency powers against individuals without sufficient justification.<\/p>\n
He claimed that Preventive Detention Orders had been used as a tool to silence dissent, alleging that social media bloggers and citizens expressing opposing views were among those targeted. According to Young, the use of PDOs in recent weeks represents a serious threat to democratic principles and the constitutional rights of citizens.<\/p>\n
Young also pointed to the recent revocation of high-profile detention orders, arguing that the decision came only after independent legal advice was obtained. He said the development raises concerns about how the emergency powers were exercised and questioned the legal basis on which the orders were initially issued.<\/p>\n
Calling the situation an unprecedented abuse of constitutional authority, Young said both the Attorney General and the Minister of Homeland Security should step down immediately. He added that if they refuse to resign, the Prime Minister should remove them from office.<\/p>\n
Young further urged the Government to bring the State of Emergency to an end, contending that its continued existence is no longer justified and is being used in a manner that undermines democracy in Trinidad and Tobago.<\/p>\n
The Government has maintained that the criminal investigation linked to the Preventive Detention Orders remains ongoing and has stated that the revocation of the orders does not signify the end of those investigations.<\/p>\n
