Church donates TT$1.5m in disaster relief supplies to strengthen emergency response<\/p>\n
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated approximately TT$1.5 million in disaster relief supplies to the Ministry of Rural Development and Local Government, bolstering Trinidad and Tobago’s emergency preparedness and response capabilities.<\/p>\n
The donation was officially handed over on Wednesday and includes a wide range of equipment to support municipal disaster management units across the country.<\/p>\n
Among the items donated are eight rescue boats, more than 50,000 sandbags, over 600 mattresses, 21 pressure washers, 19 portable generators, 16 dewatering pumps, 624 tarpaulins, 14 chainsaws and 20 ring burners.<\/p>\n
Minister of Rural Development and Local Government, Khadijah Ameen, expressed gratitude to the Church for its continued partnership and support, describing the donation as a significant investment in the safety and resilience of the nation’s communities.<\/p>\n
“These items represent more than just equipment,” Ameen said. “They represent preparedness, not reaction; resilience, even when we are vulnerable; and partnership, even where we might have isolation in case of a disaster.”<\/p>\n
The minister noted that the donation will strengthen Trinidad and Tobago’s national disaster management framework by equipping municipal corporations with essential resources needed to respond quickly and effectively during emergencies.<\/p>\n
“It strengthens our national disaster management framework by giving our municipal corporations’ disaster management units the tools they need so that they can respond swiftly, they can coordinate effectively, and they can serve communities with greater confidence and efficiency,” she said.<\/p>\n
The donation comes as Trinidad and Tobago continues to enhance its disaster preparedness efforts, particularly during the Atlantic hurricane season when communities face increased risks from flooding, landslides and severe weather events.<\/p>\n
The Ministry said the equipment will be distributed to disaster management units to improve emergency response capabilities and ensure affected communities receive timely assistance when disasters occur.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
