On Saturday, 27th June 2026, a team from UWI-SRC undertook fieldwork at Galfa Point\/L\u2019Envieuse to investigate the ground deformation recorded at the site. The investigation was triggered by recent Venezuelan earthquakes, measuring magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. Preliminary assessment of the data gathered indicates that these seismic events were indeed the cause of the deformation.<\/p>\n
This incident bears striking similarities to a past event. In 2018, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake resulted in ground deformation at Los Iros. In both cases, the seismic characteristics and unique geology of the sites were contributing factors.<\/p>\n
The UWI-SRC team is not stopping at preliminary findings. They are dedicated to a detailed assessment of the data, supplemented by drone footage of the affected area. This will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the ground deformation observed.<\/p>\n
